"Tony Mooney denies dodgy dealing"

NORTH Queensland Labor powerbroker Tony Mooney has denied claims of dodgy deals over council approval for a $500 million shopping project in Cairns.

It followed calls by opponents of the Trinity Park proposal for Premier Anna Bligh to investigate the high-profile lobbyist and former Townsville mayor's influence in the controversial development.
"Something smells here," Retailers Association national executive director Scott Driscoll said.
He said what was known for certain was that the council had allowed the development and there was "the direct involvement of Labor powerbroker and lobbyist Tony Mooney" who is a registered lobbyist for key developer Trinity Park Developments.
Mr Driscoll, who represents retailers in the Smithfield shopping centre 2km from the proposed hub development, said there appeared to have been a "suspect" decision in favour of developers and it was up to Ms Bligh to investigate and "clear the air".
But Mr Mooney dismissed the claims, saying he was not concerned by investigations into his dealings with the council. "There have not been any shady dealings or dodgy deals, certainly not by me," he said. "This is clearly a good project."
Mr Mooney said he was paid to lobby councillors on the benefits of the new retail precinct on behalf of the developer.
But he denied his position as a Labor powerbroker despite once being touted as a future state or federal MP.
"Cairns council is not controlled by any faction of the Labor Party," he said. "And I've not been a member of Cabinet or shared any secrets.
"Perhaps we should be investigating the standover tactics by the Retail Association and the links their executive may have to the Liberal Party."
Cairns Mayor Val Schier said suggestions that council was "in the pocket of any developers" was distasteful.
"The Trinity Park development in the booming northern beaches suburb near Smithfield includes plans for a bus transit hub, 24-hour medical centre, entertainment, dining, business and retail precincts and apartment-style accommodation," she said.
