Lobbyists take over where developer donors left off . Damien Power, director of GovStrat has donated $71260.50 to labor since 2016

The recent developer donation ban in Qld put the developers in a quandary. Before the 2017 Qld state election , through the property council , they screamed blue murder ‘Why you picking on us and nobody else’ (google “property council developer donations ban”) . It was admitted that donations are for buying influence. The even tried to get the Premier of Qld to call the 2017 election early so that laws would not be affected.

So , given that there is a law that makes it illegal for developers to donate and parties can therefore doublecross previous donors if they wish, how do developers and their associates get around this ? A lobbyist who donates to a party could name its price as a contract fee for a client and increasingly, its the lobbyists themselves that can get around bans by donating. Just go to http://democracyforsale.net/search-aec/ and type in “gov” or ‘relations” for a start.

Lobbying firms have many clients, but who are the firms lobbying for Hummock Hill and its developers “Eaton Place”? There are 2 listed on the Qld Integrity lobbyist register. Tourism Think Tank Pty Ltd and GovStrat . The former is Owned by Don Morris whom the Townsville Council has paid to help the developers who donated at the 2016 election get what they want . The latter, GovStrat who was also recently retained by Adani , has Damien Power as its director. GovStrat’s address is the same as his. GovStrat has donated $71260.50 to labor since 2016 .

The Qld lobbyist register shows that on the 15/05/2018 , on behalf of Eaton Place , Govstrat visited “The Coordinator General & Minister for State Development, Chief of Staff to Minister”. The purpose was explicitly stated as “Making of a decision about planning or giving of a development approval under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009”. This was just 1 month 4 days before Planning Minister Cameron Dick over-rode the Gladstone council. He has referred it to his co-ordinator general to make a decision . His ministerial release of June 19 euphemistically has as its title “Second chance for Hummock Hill Island resort proposal”. Okay , we know they lobby ministers but a donor lobbying the co-ordinator general too??? , 1 month 4 days before the “call in”??? This ministerial call is “as weird as a gerbil crawling up your arse in public “
